things we think are healthier, but really are not

Yes. We've all heard about those other options, the so-called "healthier" options, like caffeine free beverages, and diet beverages with artificial sweateners, and fat free foods, but studies have shown that the chemicals that these items contain are worse for your health than the normal ones, and that you'll be doing yourself a favor by either eating/drinking more of the normal options, or cutting them out altogether. Thoughts?

hmmm. good topic.

I usually go through the health colomn with my news paper everyday. one day they say the eggs are good for health. and by the next day the other scientist use to say that eggs are having more Cholesterol.

day by day, research after research their opinions are differing. Earlier, they were saying jogging is only good for health. but the present scientists are saying just a casual walk is more than enough. earlier, they were recommending us to eat raw vegetables. but nowadays, they say it has more bacterias.

So my personal opinion is, eat as you like. don't go deeper in researching all these things. you will get confused what to eat and what we shouldn't.

Raaj.

I've read many studies about what is good and what isn't. My favorite, and I wish I could find it again and post a link to it here, said this: (and I'm paraphrasing)
Some people say that something is good, others say its bad, so you stress over it, which makes it bad, even if it was good, because stress is bad. so, if you stop stressing over what is bad and what is good, and just do what is enjoyable and pleasurable, you'll probably be healthier.
Several cases have shown people who do nothing to make themselves healthier, and yet live to old age with perfectly healthy bodies. so it might not be what your eating at all, it might just be how much you enjoy it.

So that is what I try to live by, if I like something, I eat it, I don't count how many calories are in it. I hate math, it ruined my day in high school, I don't want it ruining my breakfast.

I think what Jess was referring to is the aspritane (sorry about the spelling), that is in diet drinks. It the same stuff in nutrasweet. Nutrasweet has been shown to cause brain tumors in laboratory animals.

Post 5 by icequeen (move over school!) on Friday, 30-Oct-2009 12:57:40

i know someone who developed an alergy from drinking diet pop on a daily basis - because of the aspertane crap in it.

I say just try to stay away from processed foods as much as one can. Use common sense about how much red meats or other high fat things and eat those in moderation. Same with sugary things.

Post 6 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Friday, 30-Oct-2009 15:20:52

Thanks Thom. That's exactly what I was referring to, as well as the chemicals they use in some coffee and tea to make them taste like they have caffeine in them, even though they don't.

the biggest joke is the 100 calorie packs. have you evrer noticed that none of them are ever anything nutritious? eat an appple or a piece of cheese instead of seven pringles. moderation in all things is the way to live a long and happy life.

Cheese should be banned!

There is more to being healthy than eating and drinking. There's being active.

Some people try to be healthy and get ill or tired more easily.

Post 9 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Friday, 30-Oct-2009 19:21:56

That's true. I mean, hey, I'm not saying don't eat/drink what you want. I'm just saying don't get fooled by the so-called "healthy choice" labels and gimics. And, please, please get rid of the MSG!

Post 10 by turricane (happiness and change are choices ) on Saturday, 31-Oct-2009 6:46:44

why should cheese be banned? it is a good food if eaten moderately.

the whole low fat thing isa joke. low fat hot dogs? they are still a high fat food. they are just less bad then the original. same with ham, balogna and a lot of other stuff.

Post 11 by Jesse (Hmm!) on Saturday, 31-Oct-2009 6:56:31

What about mainstream Chinese food, which is full of vegetables, rice, and other somewhat healthy things? However, they pour on the MSG to make it more paletable to Americans, and MSG is so bad for you!

I've heard that cafeen is unhealthy, and have heard of differing views on soyer milk. They seem to change their mind quite often, in fact. I wouldn't be fooled by the healthy choice labels, either, though.

Post 13 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Saturday, 31-Oct-2009 8:22:51

I think the terms low-fat and low-sugar/sugar-free lead to a false sense of security.

If it's sugar-free and is still sweet then it's being sweetened by something! Ultimately we all need certain things in our diets, ie sugar/fat/salt, but we don't actually need aspartame in our diets which is reputed to have cancer-causing properties.

The low-fat label is often misleading, as if you actually look at the packaging the low-fat products often have high contents of sugar and salt in order to make them taste better, so you're not really gaining anything from eating low-fat.

So if you want low-fat/low-sugar the answer is simple - just eat less of it.

The reason cheese should be banned is because it is disgusting.

If it tastes good to me I'll buy it regardless of what it says on the label. None of us are going to live for ever. I don't see any advantage in living past 100 and gradually losing my memory. I'd rather die because I ate too many beefburgers at the age of 63.

chinese food that is cooked for americans also has a whole lot of fat in it. chicken and cashews and kung pao whatever, have some tremendous amount of calories and fat grams.

Post 16 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Monday, 02-Nov-2009 8:29:00

Well, they've been trying to take MSG out of some Chinese food products, but not all. Leave it alone. It tastes fine without it. The best thing, probably, is a good, healthy, home cooked, and possibly organic meal with moderate amounts of everything, provided they're natural.

Post 17 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Monday, 02-Nov-2009 8:31:37

To the user who said that cheese should be banned, have you tried all kinds of cheese? I thought cheese was disgusting until I accidently tried real cheddar in a sandwich one day. Off topic, I know, but just a thought.

oh chees is not discusting, i eat like a small matchbox slice of cheese cause i ned to get calcium since i don't consume dairy products often enough. mom also said that since i don't get my periods often, that also affects your bones.
I don't think that's true, but i like cheese, especially cheddar cheese
i have a round babybell cheddar chese as i'm typing this

I agree, cheese is disgusting. I'm sorry, but it smells like ass and/or unwashed feet. The texture is also terrible, it's either stringy or just downright nasty in a way I can't even describe. I've hated cheese ever since I can remember, although I do like cream cheese cause that's not really cheese, besides it can be used in baking and makes a lot of stuff better that way.

Wow! what type of cheese are you guys eating. My sister went to Europe, and hated all the cheese she ate except for Monzarella. Now about unhealthy things, Aspartame (it's spelled with an M), is horrible. Not only do I not like Diet soda, the thought of all that artificial sweeteners is gross. Yeah, if you want to save money, get a regular bag of Chips-a-hoy and just eat like 1 or 2 at a time. You'll save lots of money. I understand the concept of the hundred calorie pack, but you could always get some snack sized ziploc bags and fill them yourself. It could be time consuming, but again, it's a good money saver. I have different sized containers like 1 and half cup sizes that are a good idea as well. They're cheap, convenient, and a good way to exercise portion control.

granola bars. there are some that are good b ut they are really high in sugar and some of them stick to the teeth and cause cavities.

for christmas someone gave me chocolage covered chex mix. it was delicious but certainly not healthy as they claimed on the label.

general obsession / being a nazi about what is or isn't 'ok' or 'healthy' ...
'Everything in moderation' includes moderation itself ...

Post 23 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Thursday, 18-Feb-2010 14:32:02

That's very true. All I'm trying to say here is that a lot of those so-called "healthier" choices, because they are fat free, sugar free, ETC. are often worse than the regular options because a lot of these things have chemicals in them as a substitute for the fat and sugar.
